The Chumash and Their Neighbours

Roughly 12,000 years ago, the first people settled along the West coast of California and the neighbouring Northern Channel Islands. This beautiful landscape was soon home to a thriving, complex population, comprised of regional tribes that were closely interconnected with each other. Before the Spanish Invasion, Native Indian tribes lived in 150 independent towns and villages, each speaking unique but related languages. Of these were the Chumash, Kitanemuk, Tataviam, Yokut, Gabrielino and Luiseno to name just a few.
